Small Groups

Why Small Groups?

For the Christian, most real life change happens in small groups.  Why?  C.J. Mahaney says it well: "Scripture constantly underscores the centrality of relationship . . . Genuine fellowship isn't practical in a crowd of 200 . . .Churches must create small groups where Christians can develop strong, personal relationships, where they can 'know and be known.'  A church following a biblical mode will not just 'have' small groups.  It will not just 'offer' small groups.  Rather, it will be built with small groups" (emphasis added).

If we only go to Sunday morning services, how can we, for example, "clothe ourselves with humility toward one another" (1 Pet. 5:5), or "carry one another's burdens" (Gal. 6:2)?  It is clear we are to live out the Gospel in close relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

We at Shannon believe strongly that just as Jesus drew away a small group of 12 to teach, worship, extend mercy and spread the Gospel with him in close relationships, so too our mission is to do as He did - gather ourselves in small groups, he in ancient Israel; we in modern Upstate South Carolina.  Our purpose is to provide a setting in homes in which couples and singles apply God's word, so that relationships, mercy, mission, and spiritual growth flourish.  Our goals are to form small groups for all the congregation, stir up all the gifts of everyone to build up the Body, so that real spiritual growth results in Jesus Christ being revealed among us and in our communities.

Shannon's Small Group Ministry

Shannon's Small Groups are led by experienced men who extend the pastoral and missional ministries of the church.   Close, authentic relationships are formed as people learn to care for one another and together give mercy and the good news of Jesus Christ to others.

Most of our groups meet weekly on Sunday, but others seek fellowship at other times.  We meet throughout the year.  We eat together, study together, pray for one another, and over time as trust and accountability develop mentoring relationships often spring up.  Many get together for caring and friendship between meetings. Openness and authenticity grow and gifts are expressed and flourish.

Our Small Group Ministry Team of four men and women provides study materials, training and mentoring, information about those who want to join a group, and any other help needed by Small Group Leaders.  The Team's purpose is to assist Small Groups to fulfill their purposes.
